The divine spirit of Krishna Janmashtami once again illuminated Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam, where devotion, music, and joy blended seamlessly in celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. Over the past three years, Janmashtami has blossomed here into a sacred tradition – beginning in 2023 with the Ashram’s very first celebration, continuing in 2024 with even greater grandeur, and this year, 2025, marked by a profound sense of community as hundreds of villagers gathered for the Govardana Giri Mahotsavam.
Morning: Sacred Rituals of Love
The day began with the Maha Abhishekam to Sri Venugopala Swami and Sri Radhika Devi at the Sri Sathya Sai Sadashivam Hall. Accompanied by veda chanting and the melodious strains of the Nadaswaram and Thavil, the priests performed the abhishekam with milk, curd, honey, turmeric, sandal paste, and fragrant oils.
The idol of Sri Venugopala Swami and Sri Radhika Devi, adorned with tulasi malas, exquisite jewels, and silken vastrams, shone with divine radiance as bhajans filled the hall. The atmosphere carried both reverence and joy, recalling the resplendent morning ceremonies of previous years.
As in tradition, the Gau Pooja was performed, honouring cows as symbols of divinity and abundance. They were decorated with garlands, offered fruits, and worshipped with aarti. White pigeons were released into the open skies, symbolising the eternal ideals of peace and freedom.
Evening: Govardana Giri Mahotsavam – A Sea of Devotion
If the morning rituals embodied devotion, the evening celebrations embodied togetherness. As dusk fell, hundreds of villagers from neighbouring hamlets joined devotees at Vaatsalyam for the Govardana Giri Mahotsavam, commemorating Lord Krishna’s leela of lifting the Govardhana hill to protect His devotees.
The Annakoototsavam was a sight to behold: using cooked rice, the priests artistically created the sacred form of Vittala Rakumayi — a symbol of abundance and divine nourishment for all creation. This was followed by the Pushpa Yaagam, where fragrant blossoms of tulasi, marigold, roses, and champaka were offered in a graceful, rhythmic sequence of devotion. The atmosphere grew more elevating with the resonant notes of the Nadaswaram–Thavil ensemble, interwoven with veda parayanam, soulful bhajans, and melodious keertanams.
The highlight of the evening was the flower-covered Venugopala Swami and Sri Radhika Devi, a vision that captivated every heart present. Adding to the charm of the evening, children participated in the celebrations dressed as Radha and Krishna, their innocent presence evoking the divine leelas of Gokulam.
A Festival that Grows in Grace
Reflecting on the past three years, Krishna Janmashtami at Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam has become a living tradition – from the Ashram’s first celebration in 2023 with its vibrant abhishekam, to the grandeur of 2024’s Pushpa Yaagam and Annakoototsavam, and now in 2025, where the embrace of the entire community transformed the Govardana Giri Mahotsavam into a sea of collective devotion. As Mangala Aarti concluded and prasadam was shared, the message of Krishna resounded clearly: where there is love, faith, and unity, there the Lord Himself resides.
