In commemoration of the first anniversary of Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam, an eye camp was organised on January 13, 2024 for all the villagers and tribals near Shivagiri Kshetra at the Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam. The sole objective was to make quality eye care accessible to all.
Throughout the day, many villagers eagerly visited the hospital to participate in the free eye camp. A team of optometrists and ophthalmologists examined each villager and prescribed appropriate medication and corrective lenses. Glasses and medication were provided at no cost, restoring the gift of clear vision to the villagers.
Preparation for the eye camp
Preparations for the eye camp, however, commenced well in advance. Residents of the villages and tribal settlements in the Shivagiri Kshetra area, such as Madiwala, Hoolya Hosadoddi, and Bommasandra were warmly invited by the volunteers to attend the eye camp at Vaidyalayam. To ensure the villagers don’t miss out, transportation services were organised to facilitate their travel to and from the hospital.
Eye health camp at Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam
The eye camp commenced with the lighting of the lamp at Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam and a prayer, marking the auspicious beginning of a year dedicated to selfless service for countless people.
Villagers, young and old, came in large numbers from Uyyamballi, Doddalahalli, Yellagalli, Hoolya, and Madiwala villages. Upon arrival, patients were gathered in the waiting room and subsequently taken one by one for registration at the Vaidyalayam hospital. After registration, patients were directed to the optometry department for further evaluation.
Optometry and ophthalmology consultation and free spectacle distribution
A team of optometrists diligently examined all the patients throughout the day, focusing on basic vision parameters, eye refractive power, and visual defects. For several patients whose corrective lenses were readily available, free spectacles were provided on the spot. Repeat visits were scheduled for the following weekend to provide customized spectacles to the remaining patients.
Patients in need of further examination for visual defects such as eye pressure or cataracts were directed to the ophthalmology department at Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam. There, ophthalmologists utilized state-of-the-art medical equipment to thoroughly examine each patient. Any prescribed eye medication and medicines were provided free of cost at the Vaidyalayam’s pharmacy.
The eye camp extended until 5 pm in the evening, and hundreds of patients were provided with lunch and snack prasadam.
While the villagers left with smiles and clearer sight, having experienced Bhagawan’s love through their interactions with the doctors and volunteers, they filled us with a strong resolve to continue working together to serve more of our brothers and sisters.
The eye camp imparted the vision to keep striving in our mission of selfless service, inspired by Bhagawan’s divine teachings of love and unity.
