Life can change in an instant. A routine day can unexpectedly take a devastating turn. One moment, you are running errands or commuting as usual; the next, you are facing an emergency medical crisis where every second is critical. In these grave moments when time is of the essence, access to prompt, competent medical care can mean the difference between life and death.
The rapid response of the Sri Sathya Sai Kshema Dayini ambulance service, operated by the Sri Sathya Sai Premaarpitham Foundation, has been instrumental in saving the lives of hundreds of villagers in Shivagiri Kshetra and surrounding regions. This ambulance service provides free, 24/7 emergency medical transportation to underserved rural communities. With the help of a dedicated professionally-trained ambulance operator and medical technicians, Kshema Dayini has been able to urgently answer every call for help.
We share two poignant stories from the Kshema Dayini stable that highlight the life-saving impact prompt medical intervention can have when it matters most.
Miraculous Rescue: The Power of Prompt Medical Attention
Just days ago, our ambulance operator at Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam received an urgent call from a passenger travelling down the bustling Yelagahalli main road in Kanakapura. The caller frantically explained that a motorist had tried to cross the busy thoroughfare on his motorbike, only to lose control and skid across the pavement. The vehicle’s unforgiving guard rods had speared directly through the man’s head, leaving him bloodied and in agonising pain at the scene.
Within mere minutes, our emergency team was on site, sirens blaring. Our seasoned ambulance operator quickly surveyed the grim scene before immediately administering first aid to the patient. Every second counted as the man’s vitals wavered dangerously. In under 15 minutes, the patient was stabilised and rushed 23 kilometres away to Kanakapura Government Hospital, the nearest facility equipped to treat such traumatic injuries.
Upon arrival, the doctors expressed that had the man arrived even minutes later, the outcome could have been tragically different. As it were, the man still had a fighting chance thanks to the quick thinking and urgent care of our emergency response team as part of the Sri Sathya Sai Kshema Dayini initiative.
The man’s recovery ahead would be long, but he would live to see another day, much to the tearful relief of his family of four, who relied on him as their sole provider. They were deeply grateful for the life-saving efforts of our team that fateful day.
And in that moment, amidst their collective sighs of relief, we found a renewed purpose and solace in knowing that we had been instrumental in kindling hope, and its triumph over despair.
Answering the Call of Destiny
A few months ago, Rajesh (name changed) was running errands at his local vegetable market. As he approached the shopkeeper to pay, his attention was drawn to a small poster on the wall – an advertisement for a free ambulance service operated by the Sri Sathya Sai Premaarpitham Foundation as part of its Sri Sathya Sai Kshema Dayini initiative.
Although Rajesh did not require an ambulance at the time, he photographed the poster and saved the phone number, thinking it might prove useful someday.
That day arrived sooner than anticipated. Just last week, Rajesh received urgent news that his childhood friend, Amit (name changed), had suffered a massive heart attack. With blood flow completely blocked to his heart, Amit had collapsed in distress. Recalling the ambulance service, Rajesh frantically dialled their number. Within 18 minutes, the Kshema Dayini ambulance arrived at Amit’s home, 42 km away from their base. The team promptly transferred Amit to the nearest hospital.
However, the hospital lacked the necessary resources to properly treat Amit due to the severity of his condition. With no time to spare, the ambulance rushed Amit to another hospital where emergency cardiac surgery could be performed. The doctors later informed Rajesh that if Amit’s treatment had been delayed by even a couple of minutes, he likely would not have survived. Thanks to the Sri Sathya Sai Kshema Dayini ambulance getting Amit to the right hospital just in time, his friend’s life was saved.
As Rajesh expressed his gratitude and reflected on the serendipitous moment when he noticed the poster months ago, our hearts were filled with gratitude too. Our work had not only fulfilled its purpose but had also saved a precious life!
It was a humbling reminder of the significance of our mission and the impact it has on individuals and communities. It reinforced our commitment to serving others with compassion and dedication.
