The grand Sita-Rama Kalyana Mahotsavam, held a day before Guru Poornima, drew hundreds of participants from neighbouring villages to join in this divine celebration. The festivities took place at the Sadashivam Hall of Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam and featured two main events: a special morning Vishesha Abhishekam and the evening Kalyana Mahotsavam of Mother Sita and Lord Rama. Both ceremonies were conducted with great pomp and jubilation.
Rituals of Morning Abhishekam and Aaradhana
The morning ceremony began with the unveiling of the deities: Sri Rama, Mother Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. This was followed by the commencement of the Abhishekam rituals. As part of the traditional consecrations, the priests reverently poured sacred substances such as Pancha Loka (five metals), Kumkuma, and Chandanam over the deities, all while offering heartfelt prayers. The ritual culminated with Dhoopam and Deepam Arati, after which the deities were adorned with exquisite flower garlands.
The events were elevated by the melodious strains of the Thavil-Nadaswaram troupe and devotional bhajans in praise of the divine.
As the curtains parted, they revealed the grand Alankaram of the deities, resplendent in their adornments and surrounded by offerings of fruits and sweets. Mellifluous music filled the air, transporting all present into a realm of divinity. The assembled devotees were awestruck as they beheld the glory and divine presence of Sri Rama, Mother Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman.
The morning festivals came to a conclusion with Mangala Aarti and Maha Prasadam.
Sita-Rama Kalyana Mahotsavam: A Celebration of Divine Union
The evening was filled with spiritual fervour as a large gathering assembled to witness the divine Sita-Rama Kalyana Mahotsavam. The proceedings commenced with a procession around the Ashram, carrying offerings for the deities.
The Kalyana Mahotsavam was conducted with great reverence, incorporating traditional wedding rituals. A highlight of the festivities was the priests’ ceremonial dance with flowers, which culminated in their offering the flowers to the divine couple, Sri Rama and Mother Sita, marking the sacred union.
The festivities also featured Rakshabandhanam, Pattu Vastram, Kannikaadaanam, tying of the Thaali to Mother Sita, placing of the Kireetam, Nalangu, and a Homa, culminating with the Purnahuti.
The evening programme concluded with the Maha Mangala Aarti and Prasadam distribution to all attendees. The Abhishekam and Sita-Rama Kalyanam served as powerful reminders for everyone to look to the Lord’s stories as examples for their own lives, and to celebrate His universal love with utmost humility.
