Spreading Wellness in Vision: Eye Camp at Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam

Access to quality eye care can change the course of a life. On January 25th, the Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam translated this belief into action by conducting a free eye camp that reached hundreds across Uyamballi village and neighbouring regions, restoring sight and reaffirming the Foundation’s commitment to compassionate healthcare.

How the Need Revealed Itself

In the weeks leading up to the camp, Village Seva medical outreach programmes in nearby communities uncovered a quiet but widespread concern: untreated vision impairment. Word soon travelled from one village to another. Neighbours spoke to neighbours. Families spoke to elders.

Before long, the need was unmistakable.

To ensure that no one was left behind, transport was arranged to bring beneficiaries from Uyamballi and surrounding villages to the hospital and safely return them home, removing one more barrier to accessing care.

At Sri Sathya Sai Vaidyalayam, free eye camps are conducted every month in partnership with Narayana Nethralaya and Aloka Vision Foundation, ensuring that timely eye care continues to reach those who need it most.

A Day of Care, Dignity, and Attention

By the end of the day, more than 150 villagers between the ages of 25 and 80 had been examined. They were welcomed not as patients, but as family.

Volunteers guided each person through registration with patience and warmth, followed by careful preliminary screenings.

Optometrists took time to understand individual vision needs, while ophthalmologists carried out detailed consultations, checking for infections, cataracts, and other eye conditions that often go untreated in rural settings. Through these examinations, over 50 patients were advised to have corrective spectacles, with more than 30 receiving their glasses on the same day, bringing immediate clarity and relief. Another 50+ patients were thoroughly evaluated and recommended for further surgical intervention, with clear guidance provided to ensure appropriate follow-up and continued care.

Those identified as needing spectacles were measured for customised glasses. Medicines were provided free of cost, and nourishing meals were served, ensuring that no one waited or worried through the long hours.

For many, this was not just medical attention. It was reassurance.

More Than an Eye Camp

As the day drew to a close, gratitude was visible everywhere – in folded hands, in quiet smiles, in the relief of being seen and cared for.

The January 25 eye camp was more than a medical intervention. It was an affirmation of what compassionate healthcare can look like when service is rooted in love.

As outreach efforts continue to expand across the region, the gift of sight will continue to find its way to those who need it most. Through every camp, every consultation, and every act of service, the loving grace of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba continues to touch lives – one clear vision at a time.
