The Spirit of Seva: Love in Action Across Chennai

In the heart of Chennai, amid its ever-moving streets and vibrant rhythms, a quiet yet powerful movement has been steadily growing—fueled not by fame or recognition, but by the simple desire to serve with love. It’s here that the Sri Sathya Sai Premaarpitham Foundation, through its initiative Sri Sathya Sai Prema Dayini, has been sowing seeds of compassion in ways both practical and profound.

What began in 2020 in Bangalore as a modest effort to share home-cooked meals with the hungry has blossomed into a dynamic, city-wide expression of seva (selfless service) in Chennai. The Chennai team—made up largely of elderly women volunteers—formally joined this journey in 2023, marking their first step on Sri Rama Navami—a fitting start to a journey filled with meaningful encounters and shared humanity.

The service has taken many forms, but the heart behind it remains constant: kindness without conditions.

Every week, freshly-prepared meals are lovingly cooked, packed, and distributed across Chennai neighbourhoods like Velachery, Tambaram, Pallavaram, and Chrompet. These aren’t mass-produced food parcels—they’re home-style meals prepared with intention and care, and shared with people living on the margins.

During festivals, the meals come with festive touches—sweets, snacks, health drinks—small gestures that bring joy and remind everyone that they’re not forgotten.

Interestingly, it’s not just the recipients who are nourished. Many of those involved in the cooking and distribution describe the experience as healing, even life-changing. “There’s a joy that can’t be explained,” one volunteer shared. “It feels like the hunger we’re feeding is also within us—and it disappears when we serve.”

The team’s work extends beyond food. Visits to old age homes like Akshaya Trust and Babuji Old Age Home have become cherished routines—not for the sake of duty, but for the connections formed. Time spent chatting, sharing stories, and simply being there often means more than any material donation.

Likewise, visits to children’s homes such as Paavai Foundation and Prema Vasam highlight the importance of presence. The volunteers don’t arrive as heroes—they show up as fellow human beings, ready to listen, to laugh, to support.

The sustained efforts to provide daily essentials at shelter homes comes with an underlying message: everyone matters. That message—silent but powerful—spoke volumes to both the inmates who received the aid and the volunteers who gave it.

The spirit of seva at Chennai doesn’t stop with people. Through the Maithri initiative, the team extends its compassion to animals across the city. Whether it’s feeding cows at a goshala or supporting animal rescue shelters like Woofville, each visit is grounded in the belief that all life deserves care and dignity.

Volunteers often spend time simply being with the animals—feeding them, singing bhajans near them, stroking their heads. There’s no rush, no agenda—just connection. And in those quiet, tender moments, something shifts. Always.

Service, as practiced by the Chennai volunteers, is not a one-way street. While the meals, companionship, and support benefit those in need, they also deeply enrich the givers. In a world that often feels fractured and fast-paced, these small acts of love offer grounding, perspective, and a sense of shared humanity.

One volunteer summed it up beautifully: “We go out thinking we’re helping others. But every time, we come back filled—with love, with meaning, with a sense of belonging.”

This ongoing journey in Chennai is a quiet reminder of something ancient and essential: that we are all connected, and that acts of love—no matter how small—can ripple outward in unexpected ways.

Rather than spotlighting heroes, this is a story about what happens when people come together in service and open their hearts. Everyone changes. Everyone grows.

As the work continues, so does the invitation: to pause, to connect, and to join in—because love in action is something we all have the power to offer.
